Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa is the perfect stop for history enthusiasts and archaeology enthusiasts alike. Well known for its ancient ruins, it was once the second capital of the kingdom of Ceylon for more than two centuries, between the 11th and the 13th centuries. The city is home to several surviving stupas, royal palaces, and monasteries all of which are reminders of its rich cultural and historical significance.

The most notable site is the Gal Viharaya, a sacred complex located northeast of the city centre featuring three Buddha statues carved out of granite. Other popular sites include the Lankathilake Vihara, the Rankot Vihara, the Parakrama Samudra, the Quadrangle and the Atadage, all of which are magnificent constructions of ancient Ceylon.

Take a look at the remains of many stupas, the unique structure of the Latha Mandapaya, King Nissanka Malla’s Council Chamber, and many other archaeological treasures. You will find several royal baths, pools, life-like statues, memorial slab inscriptions, courtyards, and temples of intricate designs displaying the rich artistry of Sri Lanka's past
